Portland Black Lipstick Company Theory

Women are buying more lipstick, MarketWatch reports.

But that may not be a good thing.

The Lipstick Theory holds that sales of the beauty product spike when consumers are feeling especially threatened. It’s a small luxury women feel comfortable indulging in, the theory holds, even as they turn away from other retail indulgences.

So does this recent surge in lipstick sales mean the global economy is in the tank?  Dunno.

Siouxsie is about to order some new lipstick.  But not because of the economy, because a friend just told her about this great new cosmetics company, The Portland Black Lipstick Company.  Their products look and sound amazing.

The Portland Black Lipstick Company makes around eighteen different shades of lipstick.  Check them out — Pewter Cauldron (pictured above), Black Lagoon (greenish blue), This Corrosion (rust), etc.  Any company that names cosmetics after a campy 5o’s horror movie locale and a song by the Sisters of Mercy is doing something right.  Siouxsie likes their Indigo Bridge and Bug’s Blood shades, too.  Though, the names aren’t quite as awesome.
As was mentioned above, the tubes of lipstick pictured here are from the Portland Black Lipstick Company.  Their motto is “all-natural makeup, for that unnatural look.”  Just perfect, “I’ll take one in every shade.”  You should check them out, too.

  1. ‘All- natural makeup, for that unnatural look’…perfect indeed… *want*

  2. I would be interested in hearing how long lasting you find it to be. I’m all for natural makeup, but it is not always terribly permenant or can be more prone to smearing. Since we are talking about dark lipstickes here (in stunning colors I might add), that is the main thing I worry about.

  3. I’d love to read a follow-up review, as well! I really like the purple. I’d consider ordering, but I am very picky about how long-lasting and moist lipstick is, as I live in the desert and my lips are dry enough already!!

I don’t know about other women, but I splurge on cosmetics when times are GOOD, not when I’m broke. Maybe that’s just me being too responsible again? 😉

    • I ordered the black and undead red. I’ll let you know how they are.

    • And I agree. I tend to only buy cosmetics when I have extra money, and it seems like no big deal. Unless, of course, I run out something.

    • Yeah I have to agree with you. I splurge when times are good. When times are bad I look at my closet and say “Well my skirts are six years old, but they still look okay. I can get atleast another year out of them” or I suddenly find Wet ‘N’Wild to be the best thing ever.

  4. […] the fabulous lipstick by Portland Black Lipstick Company.  I first blogged about the company here.  And they were kind enough to send me some products, including the self-described bright blue […]
