“If you are planning on immigrating into the U.S., your tattoo might be a problem.”

This tattoo could prevent you from getting into the U.S.A.

The Wall Street Journal has this story about immigrants — mostly from Latin America — being denied green cards and permanent residency due to certain tattoos.  Tattoos like the one pictured above.

The comedy/tragedy mask tattoo is used by a Central American street gang and, coincidentally, theater lovers and aspiring actors worldwide.

Profiling is always stupid, but this seems especially so.

  1. I can fully understand if your country don’t want any outlaw immigrants in the country, but they should check up the tatto before they denie the green card.

  2. I think the real tip-off was the giant #13 on the guy’s forearm in combination with the theater masks. While I agree with the premise of the article, and I suspect that the average immigration officer isn’t enough of an expert on gang tattoos to interpret this stuff, I’d bet my cat on that guy having been in MS-13 when he was younger. I wish the article had gotten to the deeper issue of what do we do with people who have gang tattoos because they used to be in a gang and aren’t anymore…?
